Traditional wedding procedures are loaded down with trivial details, but the procedures to embody the respects to both families and take the auspicious meanings of the actions. Nowadays many procedures are simplified according to different needs. Now let’s have a look on the cores that still applied by many young couples.
step 1. Sending the present (過大禮) and Reciprocation (回禮)
There are a lot of choices for the presents, no fixed items but presents chosen must be with auspicious names and of good meanings.
Sending the present (過大禮):
This is the first step in the procedure. It’s a step that groom side sends presents to the bride side. Generally it will happen 15~20 days before the wedding. Common items to prepare are as follows (some can replaced by red packet):
Roast pork and roast pork money (can use red packet money but need to indicate)
Fruits - apple and coconut are common items, and try to avoid pear.
Cakes & marry cake - cakes are for groom’s instant consumption.
3 sacrifices – chicken, goose, port and fish (now mostly replaced by red packet money)
Seafood – 4 kinds of seafood (now mostly replaced by red packet money)
2 pairs of dragon and phoenix candles, and 2 couplets . (Couplet can be posted latest 1 day before the wedding day.)
Important: Items above must be in pairs.
Reciprocation (回禮) includes:
Long pants for the groom, belts , wallets (red packet money), shoes and socks each a pair
When the presents are received, latest 1 day before the wedding (some do it on the wedding day), the bride family sends the dowry to groom's family. This procedure is call Reciprocation (回禮).
In addition to the persons sending the gifts, the bride family can send some relatives and friends to accompany. Then the group reached groom's family, they will be welcomed by the groom’s relatives and friends. The dowry includes jewelries and some common items.
Descendants barrel, red ruler, vase, copper plate and shoes, wallet and belt, scissors, quilt, sheets and pillows (dragon and phoenix embroidered), slice sugar, chopsticks and bowls with dragon and phoenix images etc.
